Lexington Commons
Welcome to the Lexington Commons, the first citizen journalism site of the Kentucky Citizen Media Project (KCMP) which aims to initiate citizen-based community news sites throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The project is based in the University of Kentucky’s Department of Community and Leadership Development and funded by a New Voices grant from J-Lab and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as well as the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. The model for KCMP’s Lexington Commons is a New Voices grantee, the Madison Commons project of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism & Mass Communication.
The Lexington Commons features news and information about politics, the economy, education, culture, youth, housing, health, the environment, and much more. The site offers information specifically about community nonprofit organizations through a “Nonprofit News Network” section. The Lexington Commons also has a “Community Connects Citizens” feature that helps people connect and network.
Since this is a citizen media project, the content comes from the residents of Lexington. These citizen reporters work in collaboration with the project team, which partners with University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, University of Kentucky Agricultural Communication Services, University of Kentucky Public Relations, and WUKY Public Radio.
