Lexington Mayoral Race Heating Up

In the Cat's Den at the University of Kentucky on Tuesday, vice-mayor and candidate for Lexington mayor Jim Gray, stepped up his criticism of incumbent Jim Newberry. Gray directed his criticism most passionately at the failed CentrePoint project in downtown Lexington that resulted in the demolishing of an entire historic block of businesses. To this day, the lot sits vacant. Here is Gray speaking at UK on Tuesday:

New Year, New Faces, New Attitude for Lexington Commons

Finally, 2010. While 2009 had its ups and downs, 2010 surely has some very intriguing things in store. Regardless of what side you're on, things are certainly different in Washington. This year's Super Bowl will undoubtedly be a doozy. Haiti will be of prime interest in the coming months, too. What I'm most excited to see in this new year has a more local feel than the NFL, national politics and the crisis in Haiti. I'm excited to see what's in store for this very website.

My College Experience

An Editorial by Anthony Mosley

The traditional definition of college is an institution of learning of the highest level, having a college of liberal arts and a program of graduate studies together with several professional schools, as of theology, law, medicine, and engineering, and authorized to confer both undergraduate and graduate degrees. However, throughout my three years of experience at the University Of Kentucky it seems that the concept should be defined as an institution of sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge otherwise known as common sense.

December Blues

As we enter the holiday season and start the month of December we are quickly swept out of the holiday cheer back into the reality of the time. For the first time that I can remember, the beginning of our the holiday season did not start with the countdown to Christmas on every television network, rather it began with President Obama implementing a strategy to end a 9 year old war. It began with the idea that to end this expensive mistake, we would first have to deploy 30,000 more troops into danger in the name of the United States of America.

The Spiral of Silence In Lexington

In looking further in to the subject of racist inequalities in the city of Lexington, Kentucky I choose to gather information by interviewing someone that has a surplus of experience in knowing about the happenings of Lexington. I chose to interview Kristy Runyon of ABC 36 news here in Lexington. She is the Noon Anchor/ Health Reporter but before she gained this title she was involved in researching inequality in Lexington.

Is Lexington Ready for the World Games?

Is Lexington Ready for the Games?
288 and counting.
That is how many days are left until the equestrian world storms Lexington and Central Kentucky. The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are being held for the first time in the United States and Kentucky has been chosen as the host for the prestigious event. The World Games is held every four years, two years prior to the Summer Olympic Games. (http://www.alltechfeigames.com/about/overview.aspx?id=60&ekmensel=c580fa...)

A Silver Lining to Lexington's Housing Proposal

A major issue in Lexington right now is a student-housing proposal that would redistribute housing near the University of Kentucky’s campus and ultimately force students further away from the college. A recent study found that, due to the recession, people either want or will want more affordable housing. Such housing can be found in the neighborhoods surrounding UK’s campus, where many students live.

A Day at the Kentucky Nonprofit Leadership Forum

For my first real assignment as a citizen journalist, I covered the 2009 Kentucky Nonprofit Leadership Forum. It was an interesting experience, filled with good people and interesting information.
The directions were simple—observe and report. I was to sit in on sessions and videotape interviews with attendees and speakers afterwards. Very simple indeed, but I lacked experience in interviewing and broadcast. I had the camera for less than a day and figured out how to use it in the wee hours of the morning. I was barely prepared for the assignment, if prepared at all.

Fark.com Creator Sheds Light on Major Media Problem

I didn’t know what to expect when I attended the question and answer session with Fark.com founder Drew Curtis in the Kentucky Kernel's newsroom. Up until the Lexington native explained his website, I had no earthly idea what Fark was.

Fark.com essentially finds interesting—and mostly hilarious—news stories, rewrites the headline, and posts a link to the actual story. Although it is a very simple endeavor, the site has been a hit. According to Curtis, Fark receives four million views every month.

UK Beats Cards!

Today the Wildcat nation celebrates the governor's cup victory over the Louisville Cardinals. It's great to be in Lexington and feel the joy of a win in a sold out Commonwealth Stadium! Our football program continues to grow and succeed under the leadership of Coach Brooks. I hope he stays for many years to come. Go Big Blue!
